Gold is the Currency in the game. It is earned by: collecting from your dragons' habitats; selling items, dragons and/or dragon eggs; winning it in the Monday reward pouch; collecting in the Dragon Market, where you can collect food or gold and hire your Dragon City friends to increase the amount that you get; winning a tournament in the stadium, which will give you gems as well as gold for winning

As you expand your Dragon City, you will find that each expansion will cost 10,000 gold extra every section. All in all there are 4 islands available to get in Dragon City. The 3rd and 4th islands cost gems to unlock and you then have to spend gold to unlock the 8 expansion areas.
